Energy saving measures - also at KIT
Everyone can help
Whether on a private matter or business related, the topic of energy-saving measures concerns us all. At KIT, the Facility Management (FM) Unit is in charge of technically implementing and realising optimisations in the energy and heat supply systems of buildings and utilities. In order to realise our savings targets, we have compiled some tips here where each and every individual can contribute to the achievement of our goals.
Efficient heating
Even lowering the room temperature by one degree Celsius saves energy.
To maintain a room temperature of 19°C (specified for offices according to EnSikuMaV), we recommend setting the thermostat (when available) on the radiators between 2 and 3. If the thermostats or the heating gurgles no longer work properly and thus needs to be vented, please contact FM via the ticket system.
For heaters to work efficiently, they should not be covered by furniture.
Please close the rooms that don’t need to be heated. This prevents rooms that are supposed to stay warm from cooling down and reduces the risk of condensation, which can form on the outer walls of the cooler room.
Turn down the heater during longer absences. If you do not want to operate each heating valve individually, you can use programmable or networked thermostats. Contact FM via the ticket system.
If you are away on a business trip or otherwise not at KIT for a longer period of time, but have forgotten to turn down your heating, you can also inform FM via the ticket system. We will take care of your office.
Air the rooms out
Airing the rooms out also helps: If possible, fully open the windows for a few minutes. In this way, the air in the room is renewed quickly without the walls cooling down on the inside. When the windows are closed again, the heating only has to heat up the fresh air, not the massive components.
In the cold season, please remember to also close any upper tilting windows that may be present and only air out through the large windows. This also protects our bats in the transitional period.
Reduction of power consumption
Switch off the light as soon as you leave the room, even the light in hallways or sanitary rooms does not have to be on all the time.
Motion detectors help save electricity. Brightness sensors also help, as they automatically adjust the light depending on the incidence of daylight. You are also welcome to get support from FM via the ticket system.
Many electronic devices often cannot be switched off completely and thus waste electricity unnecessarily in stand-by mode. This is recognizable when e.g. a light is permanently on on your docking station or the power supply units of devices are warm or humming. This can be remedied by socket strips with toggle switches or socket attachments with timers.
In decentralized server rooms, turn off the air conditioning or check whether the temperatures can be raised. Refrain from using elevators and fans - the use of fan heaters in particular must be avoided.
Have you come up with another energy-saving idea?
Please report them to FM via the ticket system.
