The Utilities and Waste Management Department (VEA), in collaboration with KIT’s environmental protection officers, regularly hosts an information course for facility representatives, waste management coordinators, and wastewater management coordinators. The course provides an opportunity to learn about the services offered by the Supply and Waste Management Facilities and about developments in workplace environmental protection.
Utility and Waste Management Facilities (VEA)
Due to its size, self-contained location, and specific requirements, Campus North requires a wide range of on-site utility and waste management services. The Utility and Waste Management Systems Department (VEA) operates the central systems and facilities necessary for this purpose and is expanding them to ensure they are future-proof. To ensure high customer satisfaction and environmentally sound and cost-effective operations, a certified quality and environmental management system in accordance with DIN ISO EN 9001 and 14001 has been implemented. VEA is also responsible for campus-wide services such as energy control and monitoring, as well as waste disposal.

Our Responsibilities
- Expansion and renovation measures to adapt to changing needs or maintain functionality, and to meet customer requirements.
- Emissions monitoring and tracking in accordance with permits, greenhouse gas credit trading, and assessment for environmental and energy taxes.
- Consulting and services related to utility and energy management.
- Specialized treatment of special wastewater or difficult-to-treat wastewater from research areas, particularly the decontamination of radioactive wastewater.
- On-site consulting for waste generators with the target of reducing disposal costs and facilitating the transport of hazardous materials.
- Design and operational management of efficient energy systems (facilities in accordance with the KWKG and EEG) and utility networks.
- Chemical and physical analyses of samples from the department’s operational facilities and those of KIT; consulting on analytics and wastewater treatment; consulting on process planning and management; continuous monitoring of operational facilities at KIT.
- Performance of all tasks in accordance with the nuclear licensing requirements and the Radiation Protection Ordinance.
